Research finds its way to society via UtrechtInc

After 4 months of support at UtrechtInc on January 19 six startups presented themselves in front of an independent jury and audience. Five startups, mainly from the Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht, now have access to the follow-up programme and the possibility to obtain a starting capital of € 18,000.

The importance of support to startups was endorsed yesterday by Prins Constantijn during his visit of to the incubator that morning and in the letter of state secretary Dekker (OCW) to the Lower House of Parliament. Jorg Kop, director of UtrechtInc: “We are committed to making smart ideas and scientific research accessible and applicable for society via entrepreneurship. These startups are practical examples of this added value.”

Company, team and product

With their pitch Bolas, LeanLibrary and uCrowds were granted funding yesterday. The loan has a low interest rate, does not include the issue of shares and comes from a fund that UtrechtInc manages on behalf of Rabobank Utrecht and Utrecht University. Together with Happi and Sensorfact they can continue to further expand their company, team and product at UtrechtIn. Dr. J.E. Arends: “As internist infectiologist with Happi I took the step towards entrepreneurship. With this support my team and I can further develop our application to improve the autonomy of patients with HIV.”

Demo Day

Besides future strategies with Demo Day the start-ups also look at their progress in the last few months. It is an intense time. Risky assumptions were tested and the first client contracts were signed. This is not unknown territory for (ex Silicon Valley) serial entrepreneur Richard Straver. At the finals on January 19 he shared his experience as the founder of the online Online Payment Platform. The evening programme got a humorous touch with chairman and comedian Paul Schoolderman.

In house for two years

After successful completion of Demo Day start-ups remain on average two more years at UtrechtInc. Here, the entrepreneurs in E-Health, E-Climate of E-Learning and Scientists find access to starting capital, housing, entrepreneurs, young talent, experts, clients and advice. Currently the incubator has 30 start-ups.
